http://www.charlotte.com/local/story/224644.htmlThe Brookshire Freeway has been a dark stretch of Interstate 277 for months.
But the N.C. Department of Transportation hopes to have solar lights installed by the spring or summer of 2008, which is believed to be a first for the state.
The lights would be welcomed by drivers, who have complained that the dark expressway isn't safe. One motorist compared it to being on a country road in the heart of the state's biggest city.
The project was supposed to have been finished by this fall, but local DOT engineers were worried that the solar bulbs wouldn't be bright enough. A more powerful solar light is now available from Rock Hill-based SC Solar, said N.C. DOT division engineer Barry Moose, allowing the project to move forward. Now Moose is waiting on approval from his bosses in Raleigh.
