China can cut emissions without hurting growth: Gore
Tue Aug 7, 2007 6:22AM EDT

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - China can cut its carbon emissions
without jeopardizing economic growth if it uses new
technologies that do not emit greenhouse gases, former
U.S. Vice President Al Gore said on Tuesday.

Gore cited the mobile phone industry as an example of a
business that does not need to burn fossil fuels such as
oil and coal.

"There are ways to leap-frog the old, dirty technologies,"
said Gore, who was speaking at the Global Brand Forum
in Singapore.

China, like other developing nations, is worried that plans
to cut carbon emissions would cripple its economic
development.

1. c'mon folks, who actually believes this?
I suppoae its nice that
AG wants these poor/developing countries to obey him,
its just not gonna happen.

when XYZ country spends 3 billion on a
coal fired electricity plant,
it WANTS electricity.

not a 1 percent (if that) return
on the money, with carbon savings

2. I love Al Gore, but lately he seems to be more disconnected from reality
China will continue to grow it's economy at 10%/year and cut emissions enough to make a dent in their CO2 emissions? The same country building 3 coal-fired plants a year and selling millions of new cars a year to its booming middle class? Hey, it might happen. Maybe they'll invent fusion power. Maybe I'll win the lottery tomorrow. I'm not gonna hold my breath though.

5. I can still hardly believe it when I type it. Truth is scarier than fiction.

6. More growth just means we further alter the environment
It is growth, no matter the form, that is the main problem. Growth requires control. Control requires manipulating the environment to increasingly fit only our wants. As that manipulation eventually no longer sustains what we desire, we need to expand our control.
