Early 2007 saw record-breaking extreme weather

The weather is getting more extreme thanks to human-caused climate change (as I’ve pointed out many times, see here, here, and here).

Now the World Meteorological Organization reports more evidence:

In January and April 2007 it is likely that global land surface temperatures ranked warmest since records began in 1880, 1.89°C warmer than average for January and 1.37°C warmer than average for April. Several regions have experienced extremely heavy precipitation, leading to severe floods. The Fourth Assessment Report of the WMO /UNEP Intergovernmental Group on Climate Change (IPCC) notes an increasing trend in extreme events observed during the last 50 years. IPCC further projects it to be very likely that hot extremes, heat waves and heavy precipitation events will continue to become more frequent.

“The start of the year 2007 was a very active period in terms of extreme weather events,” said Omar Baddour of the WMO’s World Climate Program.

Here are some of the extremes that have been happening around the globe in 2007 as reported by Reuters and the WMO:

South Asia’s worst monsoon flooding in recent memory has affected 30 million people in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, destroying croplands, livestock and property and raising fears of a health crisis in the densely-populated region…

1. Heat index here today? Almost 115F. Set to break a 77 year-old record high.

2. Same Here!
Now I have to go to work this afternoon in a restaurant were the air conditioner is broken. Can't wait.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Sena says that the hottest spot will likely be along the coast, where the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity is expected to create a dangerous heat index of around 115 degrees for at least a few hours Tuesday afternoon.

The metro Atlanta area should see a heat index of around 105 degrees Tuesday afternoon, barely cooling down even at night. In central and south Georgia, the index will be around 110 and some northern Georgia spots like Rome and Athens could reach that high as well.

3. And this week feels like the start of summer in North Texas.Record rains, cloud
cover,we've had only a handful of days where the temperature has reached 90.Today at 1:00 PM CDT it's at 92 with a THI of 102.High should be close to 100.

Record rains from the middle of April to August and other parts of Texas and the Southern Plains have had it as bad or worse.

And now in the middle of August people are really grateful that the typical scenario of highs around 100 with no foreseeable rain in the future has finally arrived.

Most strange weather patterns,indeed.

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- Extreme weather has plagued the globe this year, a U.N. agency says, causing some of the highest temperatures on record.

The World Meteorological Organization said "global land surface temperatures for January and April will likely be ranked as the warmest since records began in 1880," according to the United Nations.

WMO said temperatures were 1.89 degrees Celsius (3.4 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than average for January and 1.37 degrees C (2.45 degrees F) higher than average for April.

The agency found that climate warming was unequivocal and most likely "due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels."
