China's heavy industries increase power use
Sat Aug 11, 2007 11:26PM EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's power-guzzling industries such as steel
and chemicals consumed even more electricity in the first half of
the year, making it tough for the country to meet its energy
conservation goals, Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.

The government said on July 30 that the energy used to generate
each dollar of national income, or energy intensity, fell 2.78
percent in the first half of 2007 from a year earlier.

the first half, 3.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier,

in these industries, but Xinhua said meeting the nationwide goal
for reducing energy intensity was "arduous."
