"Utah Woman, 70, Charged for Brown Lawn"
OREM, Utah (AP) - The mayor and City Council have apologized to a 70-year-old woman arrested after a dispute with a police officer over her brown lawn - but she has still been charged in the case.

Two misdemeanor charges were filed against Betty Perry last week: resisting arrest and violating an ordinance that requires property owners to maintain their landscaping.

"We don't make our decision based on what political leaders do or think. ... There's a huge other side of the story," City Attorney Paul Johnson said Wednesday. "There's a violation that needs to be corrected."

Officer James Flygare arrived at Perry's house last month to talk about her dead grass and foot-high weeds. Perry's water apparently had been turned off at her request.

1. "Fell against the door

and injured her nose."
I weep for this country.
Let's see, the emphasis should be on why did she turn off her water. Could it be she had to choose between water and food or water and medicine?

3. This really is unbelievable. I am sure there are other details not
mentioned but still, unbelievable. I would hope that she gets some legal assistance and would be interested how this goes.

4. Too little information in the story, and...
we don't know if there was a history with this woman and the town. Lotsa weeds like that don't show up overnight and what's this about water being shut off?

Falling down and hitting your nose on the door while in police custody is always good for an investigation, though.

5. Hmmmm. You rely on social security and you have to pay property taxes,
maybe pay for prescription drugs, eat, buy gas at maybe $2.75+ a gallon, pay for car repairs, make home repairs, telephone line maintenance (let alone calls), etc. and just maybe you don't have enough cash at the end of the month for a landscaper who charges $75 to do your lawn twice month (not including fertilizing and watering).

6. Come and get me!
My lawn and those of my neighbors are all brown because of the drought in our part of Maryland since the beginning of May.

Get the paddy wagon, we're guilty.
