AUSTRALIAN of the Year Tim Flannery has demanded the Federal Government tell the voting public before the election the price it plans to put on carbon emissions. The scientist is working with international experts towards an agreement to combat climate change after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.
He said the proposed national emissions trading scheme meant nothing without a solid greenhouse emissions reduction target. "Every Australian has a right to know," Professor Flannery said. Voters should be told before the federal election so they could make an informed choice, he said.
Professor Flannery said a price of between $40 and $70 per tonne of carbon emitted was necessary to stem the tide of dangerous climate change. "If it's $70 a tonne we'll probably (avoid) dramatic change," he said. This is well above the current and projected price of carbon on the existing European Union carbon market, but a price of between $10 and $20 a tonne "meant nothing", he said.
He said the world - including Australia - needed to rapidly "decarbonise". "To stay below the dangerous threshold we'll basically have to decarbonise (in the next 40 years)."
