Chemicals in non-stick pans may retard babies' growth
Chemicals in non-stick pans may retard babies' growth
Toxin in daily use in the home should be phased out, says researcher
By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor
Published: 26 August 2007

Chemicals used in non-stick pans, fast-food containers, carpets, furniture and a host of other everyday household products are retarding babies' growth and brain development, two startling new studies suggest.

The studies – from the United States and Denmark, both published in the past month – found that babies with increased levels of the chemical in their umbilical cords were born smaller and with reduced head sizes. Though the changes were small, reductions in weight and brain development at birth have been associated with health problems throughout life.

The chemical – perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) – has been used so widely and is so persistent in the environment that it has been found all over the world – even in the Arctic and in remote Pacific atolls – in rain and water supplies, food, wildlife and human blood.

1. We started cooking in cast iron and stainless steel only, about a year ago...
...when I read somewhere that every child born in the U.S. has Teflon in his or her cord blood. Ugh.

2. We will all see teflon banned
and future generations will wonder how we were ever dumb enough to think the stuff was safe.

4. It's been my experience that
cast iron is less sticky than teflon pans (I didn't used to think this). The trick is in learning how to use the iron pan: how to keep it seasoned with oil while it's heating up and cooling down. Another simple thing is to never wash it with detergents, they definitely cut the grease (oil) and hurt the pan's seasoning.

I really don't know why anyone uses teflon pans. Maybe cast iron is too heavy for those with weak wrists.

6. That's why I don't use Iron pans
I have arthritic hands, and can't use them anymore. I used them for years and years. I don't use aluminum pans either. I use stainless steel and don't cook on high heat much anymore. I also use wooden or stainless utensils. They last longer, are less toxic, and are not as hard on the pans.

8. Hi IC!
:hi:

I've been around, but haven't been posting much. Lost my tuxedo cat Miro late last year (he was 17 and had cancer :-(), but have a new little guy named Mithril:

he and Oberon are getting along quite well:

But Puck still has yet to warm up to the little guy.

How are you and yours?
