1. How horrible

I hope they are prosecuted. And I hope they do not get permission to hunt gray whales in the future.

This is the Makahs.

2. What makes you think the Makahs did this?

The white man is no angel. If the Makahs did this it should be punished. Machine guns were not part of Indian heritage.

3. The story says so
and this is an ongoing issue.

"In May 1999, Makah whaling captain Wayne Johnson watches the distribution of the only whale killed since the Makah resumed their hunt."

5. A lot of country boys have 'em...
They're modified to shoot one bullet at a time, so they're legal. They're for sniping at extremely long range. It's a stupid weapon to shoot a whale with, and they are stupid people. I hope they go to prison, and no one buys into their "special" status to torment endangered wildlife...

6. It appears there was no machinegun
The most recent news stories say a Weatherby bolt-action rifle was confiscated, not a machinegun. Weatherby does not produce either machineguns or .50 caliber rifles. The original reporter was pulling shit out of his/her ass with the "machinegunned whale" story.

Other than that, we're in perfect agreement: they're morons and should go to prison for what they've done.

7. Wonder if there's a chance of a .50 bouncing of water?
I don't know. Would a .50, shoot at a low angle, have a chance of bouncing off the water? I know .50's can travel a Loooooong distance.
