AllAfrica - Flooding Cuts Off 25 Districts In Uganda From Outside World
Severe floods have so far killed 18 people, cut off 25 districts in the country and the worst is yet to come, the government announced yesterday in an overview of the situation to date. State Minister for Disaster Preparedness Musa Ecweru told Parliament that although 25 districts countrywide have been affected by the floods "in varying degrees" the Teso sub-region is the "epicentre of the catastrophe, affecting almost all the districts in Teso, with Katakwi and Amuria as the worst hit."

An emergency team from the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health dispatched to assess the flood-hit areas, he said, discovered that a total of 6 million people stand affected in 22 critical districts.

Mr Ecweru said all six districts in Teso -the others including Soroti, Kaberamaido, Bukedea and Kumi, were bearing the brunt of the floods and listed other affected districts as; "the entire Acholi region" (Gulu, Amuru, Kitgum and Pader) as well the Districts in Elgon Region (Bukwo, Manafwa, Bududa, Sironko, Kapchorwa and Mbale.

But in the Lango sub-region, thousands of former internally displaced persons have fled back to the camps after floods swept away their homes. Roads and bridges have been destroyed in all the affected regions, Mr Ecweru said, adding that Karamoja sub-region had been cut-off from the rest of the country.
