OAK RIDGE — With a dozen 50-round bursts of ammo, each one lasting barely a second but trailed by a powerful report, the government’s Oak Ridge security contractor Thursday showed off the latest in protective firepower.

Wackenhut Services invited the news media and other guests to the Oak Ridge Central Training Facility to view a short demonstration of the Dillon Aero Gatling Gun, which was mounted on an armored vehicle.

The gun can fire 3,000 rounds per minute of 7.62-millimeter ammunition and reportedly is capable of taking down aircraft and defending key nuclear facilities from terrorist assaults.

“Every time we look at the Design Basis Threat (the government’s intelligence report on terrorism) and see the adversary that may confront us, we look to see if we have the tools that we need to defeat that adversary,” Rackstraw said. “The addition of the Dillon weapon system to our inventory gives us a capability we didn’t have before.”

1. Mini Guns have been around a long time.
They mounted them on choppers and under F4s. The A10 "Warthog" has a 20mm mini gun in it's nose.

2. But you don't need them to defend wind farms or solar electric plants
only nuclear plants that use dangerous nuclear fuel...

3. In 'Nam they would spit the rounds out so fast that at night
even though only every tenth one was a tracer it would look like a long red rope dangling from the choppers as they fired
