39 ways to take the heat off Mother Nature

The Forest Grove News-Times, Oct 3, 2007
This is the final installment of a series on global warming that was researched and written by News-Times readers Edith Pillsbury and Mark Barrett.

The previous installments can be read on the Sustainable Life page of the News-Times web site, http://www.fgnewstimes.com .

By Edith Pillsbury for the news-times

Global warming is no longer an abstract concept — its effects can be seen globally, nationally and locally. But – and this is a big but – there is so much we can do.

All of it is simple and, better yet, most of it saves us money! Clip this list, and check off the items as you implement them.

2. And of course it misses the single most important one.
One which I won't mention because it seems to offend so many. But there you have it. If you can't do that big one, then don't bother with the others.

I will give a hint- billions.

3. You're saying if you have billions you can buy carbon credits to offset your yearly trips to Europe?
Great idea! :D

4. Just say, "I HELP"
Involve Yourself. Get involved in local environmental and social justice groups. Find a cause that resonates with your values and will have some impact on your community, and join a local group that champions it. This kind of involvement is especially powerful, as you will become part of an enormous, decentralized, global social movement.

Humanize. Expand and strengthen your social networks. Make new friends and strengthen ties with existing ones.
Economize. Reduce the amount of “stuff” and energy you need to support your quality of life.
Localize. Reduce the amount of travel required in your life. This means reducing the amount of personal travelling you do as well as reducing the distance the things you need must travel to get to you. Patronize local businesses, maybe try the Hundred Mile Diet.
Produce. Produce as much as you can of your own food and energy. Plant a garden, put up solar panels, make biodiesel from waste grease, cut your own firewood.
