Firewood costs rise Cord cutters say higher fuel costs much to blame (Maine)
http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/4342455.html

As winter approaches and the search for fuel begins, firewood prices are at or near historic highs, according to a survey of area sellers.

For the fifth year running, a cord of firewood is going for as much as $180 to $230. It used to cost $110 to $130.

As the days get shorter and hints of autumn creep into the air, residents preparing to stock up on wood also are checking the prices for oil. The cost of home heating fuel is offering little relief.

Andy Allen, owner of A.W. Allen Firewood in Hallowell, blames the increase in wood dealers' wood prices on the cost of diesel.

1. Yup. If you need firewood, it pays to have a chainsaw and some land.
Wood is not getting cheaper, and that has nothing to do with a shortage of trees!

3. $80
I can get a cord of unsplit wood for as low as $80. If you don't mind spending hours splitting wood by hand it's the way to go. However, it's getting harder and harder to find people selling unsplit wood because they can make so much more selling it already split.
