The World Without Us
Edited on Fri Oct-05-07 03:39 PM by XemaSab
Excellent book.

Sort of depressing, but also very hopeful.

It's written in a way that's more like a series of essays than a unified book.

A big part of the book is devoted to talking to paleontologists, archaologists, and anthropologists about what came before us: vanished species, vanished proto-homonids, vanished cities, and vanished civilizations. He also devotes a lot of time to our petroleum infrastructure, plastic waste, and nuclear waste. Perhaps the best part of the book were his visits to areas of Cypress abandoned after the war there, Chernobyl, and the Korean DMZ. Finally, there's an excellent discussion of the Panama Canal and a really cool soil test plot in Britain.

It's good stuff. :)

5. Great book, just a vehicle to consider the many facets of the environmental issue
Some, like the gigantic Garbage Patches, were unknown aspects, though no less significant.

Fantastic book. A treasure trove of facsinating information.
