FPL wind farm boosts local economy, alternative energy (TX)

ABILENE, TEXAS — Prepare to wait at the Abilene Regional Airport if you arrive there at noon some Friday for a 2:30 p.m. flight.

They may not be ready to open the security gates for another hour or so.

In fact, you may be the only one at the airport besides the Transportation Security Administration, airport staff and crew for the commuter arms of American and Continental Airlines.

Flying into the 120,000-person town is a different story, however. Those flights are usually full, and everyone from the rental car customer-service representatives to the airline staff knows why the travelers are coming to town: Wind power.
