Oakland shines in solar use

When it comes to solar energy capacity, Oakland is tops in the Bay Area.

That's according to the NorCal Solar Energy Association, an organization that encourages solar use that recently announced the cities it will award at a first-of-its kind banquet later this month.

``It's exciting that Oakland has so much going on with solar,'' said Liz Merry, program manager for NorCal Solar.

Oakland will receive a first-place award for having the most solar watts installed among large cities in 10 counties around the Bay Area.

Oakland has 5,989,931 watts of solar power installed, compared to the 4,549,299 that second-place San Francisco has. In a statement, Mayor Ron Dellums said, ``This award is a significant acknowledgment of the diligence and commitment Oakland has towards the goal of sustainability and energy efficiency.''
