It's beautiful beach weather. As long as you don't mind coughing, wheezing, itchy skin, a sore throat, a runny nose and watery eyes. Oh, and don't forget the dead fish.
A red-tide bloom has blossomed from Pensacola Beach to Navarre Beach, making going into the Gulf of Mexico miserable for beachgoers and killing some marine life. The Escambia County Health Department issued a health advisory on Monday warning of the red-tide bloom.
Red tide can affect respiratory systems and can cause eye, nose and throat irritation. There are no long-term effects from red-tide exposure.
"It gets in your eyes, and you can't stop coughing," said Bryce Bruno, 20, a surfer and employee at Waterboyz, a Pensacola surf and skate shop where numerous customers have complained about the red-tide bloom. "We had two guys come in here who were out (in the Gulf) for 45 minutes, and their eyes were still red and they were coughing."
