Venice's 'war' on bottled water (BBC)
By Mark Duff
BBC News, Milan

The patriarch of Venice is urging Catholics in the Italian city to give up bottled water for the Christian fasting season of Lent.

Angelo Cardinal Scola wants them to donate the money saved to a water pipeline project in Thailand.

He is being backed by the mayor, who says he drinks only tap water and calls bottled water an unnecessary luxury.

Some 100,000 families can now expect to get a carafe from a local water firm to keep their tap water fridge-fresh.

Nearly all Italians drink bottled water rather than the piped stuff.

1. bottled water is elitist bullshit
unless it's got some extra vitamins and such

Get a britta, stick it in your fridge. Done.

2. There are even Britta filters you can attach directly to the tap.
They're simple to fit and mean you can wash vegetables and fruit in filtered water too.

Before using a filter, though, it's good to check with the organization responsible for water quality in your area, to find out what particular noxious chemicals are likely to be in your local supply. That way you can buy a filter that gets rid of them (not all filters target the same stuff). Not much use having a great lead filter if there's no lead it your water. Even worse if you have mercury and the filter doesn't catch it.
