Deep freeze in western Greenland
The ice between Canada and southwestern Greenland has reached its highest level in 15 years.

'Satellite pictures show that the ice expansion has extended farther south this year. In fact, it's a bit past the Nuuk area. We have to go back 15 years to find ice expansion so far south. On the eastern coast it hasn't been colder than normal, but there has been a good amount of snow.'

But how do these new reports fit in with continual reports that ice in the Arctic Ocean has been melting at a record rate due to increasing temperatures? And isn't global warming at the top of the political agenda these years? (snip)

'Weather is a phenomenon which changes from year to year and right now the atmosphere has changed so we have cold weather. That will certainly mean that melting ice in the North Pole will be less this year, but next year the situation can look completely different,' according to Henriksen.

Meanwhile they are being warned about Polar Bears.

1. Wonder if he's willing to bet on this:
"That will certainly mean that melting ice in the North Pole will be less this year, but next year the situation can look completely different,' according to Henriksen."

Cause I'll take some of that action.

2. Is the Reason They're Focusing on That Specific Area
that the ice is melting everywhere else?

3. i believe "cherry picking" is the phrase you're looking for
If scientists record 100 measurements and 99 show higher temps, you better believe the climate change deniers will grab that one that dont fit and wave it all around, shouting "SEE! Its actually getting COLDER!"

I guess seeing patterns and drawing trend lines isnt something they teach any more.

5. Looking at what's been going on up there...
hasn't part of the ice-disappearing story been a current of wind pushing the ice out, from the pacific side? That would be consistent with seeing more ice here on the atlantic side. Say, between Greenland and Canada.

That aside, it's always amusing (in a grim sort of way) to hear these self-annointed skeptics lecture everybody on the deep, deep insight that weather changes from year to year. I mean, wow -- did they think that up all by themselves? All us DFHs sure feel foolish now.
:eyes:

6. If you look at the ice animation yeah, there's been a STRONG drift
pushing ice towards Greenland and away from Alaska.

Other factors could be increased snowfall or less stable ice. I thought of an additional explanation and lost it... :banghead:

GDP is like washing down paint chips with wood alcohol--I've lost my ability to think. :banghead:

I've been encouraging GD-P burn-outs to spend some time over here in E/E, to learn what angst really is.

8. I blocked GD:P from my latest posts list two weeks ago.
Haven't been there once since then. I want no part of it. Don't care. No rat's ass for me!!

All the news that matters can be found here, in the Economy forum, in LBN, and occasionally in the regular GD.
