No impact from Energy Saving Day
The UK's first Energy Saving Day has ended with no noticeable reduction in the country's electricity usage.

E-Day asked people to switch off electrical devices they did not need over a period of 24 hours, with the National Grid monitoring consumption.

It found that electricity usage was almost exactly what would have been expected without E-Day.

Colder weather than forecast in some regions may have led to higher use of heating, masking any small savings.

1. The Brits' light switches must not be working properly.
Maybe they need to clap harder...

2. Are they really that powerless?
Or does Nintendo really have them by their small hairs?

3. My take: there are a million individual reasons, which all add up to...
the observation that humans do not voluntarily reduce their standard of living.

I must say, that this disappointed even my famously gloomy expectations. I would have predicted that people might voluntarily reduce their power consumption for a day, but not on any usefully sustained basis. Evidently, even a single day for purely symbolic purposes is unobtainable.

4. Speaking for myself ...
... I forgot all about it but the difference would have been pretty small
as we don't use "standby" in our house and even the kids are trained to
switch off lights that aren't in use ...
