SAS may greenlight solar farm in Cary

CARY - Billionaire Jim Goodnight's software giant SAS is working on plans to build a four-acre "solar farm" with panels that would comprise the largest solar energy site in North Carolina.

In an internal note circulated to employees, the company says the facility is to be in place by this time next year. Electricity generated by the panels would be put back on the electrical grid, but SAS would receive credits against the power it uses on its campus.

SAS spokesman Dave Thomas confirmed the company is laying plans for a solar farm, but he says they are preliminary. "It's something we're considering; it's not something we've decided yet," he says.

Thomas says the plans are part of the company's continuing effort to be "environmentally friendly." He says a solar farm would be located on the SAS campus and that the company is working on a feasibility study.
