Turkish Energy Ministry Opens Bid For Country's First Nuclear Reactor
http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7010433866

Ankara, Turkey (AHN)- Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said Tuesday that the government has invited local and foreign companies to bid for the development and operation of the country's first nuclear power plant.

The 4,000-megawatt nuclear facility will be built in Akkuyu near the Mediterranean port city of Mersin. The power plant is predicted to raise capacity to offset expected power supply shortages.

Nuclear energy is expected to reduce Turkey's dependence on foreign fuel, and to cope with the country's electricity demand, which is increasing at eight percent annually.

Guler said the government will equally generate its power supplies from various energy sources such as natural gas, coal, nuclear, hydroelectric and renewable energy. Half of Turkish supplies are from gas-fired plants, a quarter from coal and the rest from the country's hydro-electric dams.
