CARIBOU, Maine (AP) — Gov. John Baldacci is asking President Bush to declare a disaster in Aroostook County following a blizzard that capped a season of record snowfall.

The blizzard pushed Caribou's seasonal snowfall to 192 inches of snow, breaking the previous record of 181 inches in 1955. More snow is predicted for this weekend.

There's so much snow that the Maine Department of Transportation reported that 40 roads are so clogged by snowbanks that they're down to a single lane.

1. Did you see the front page of the BDN on 3/26?
Photo of snowbanks touching the bottom wires on the telephone pole lines.

6. I can't find an image online but saved a copy of the paper to
show my relatives & friends in NJ when I go to visit later this month. They think I'm making this stuff up.

The snow banks around my house (from shoveling the roof 11 times) have melted some but in the morning before it gets "warm" and the snow is hard, I can still walk up the bank and hop up onto the roof of my one story house with very little effort. And I'm about 100 miles south of Caribou where the real snow is.

Presque Isle: Aroostook County reports 2nd record 14 below zero

http://bangornews.com/news/t/aroostook.aspx?articleid=162105&zoneid=175

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On Tuesday afternoon, Kate Stewart was chastising herself for not watching the Weather Channel on Monday evening.

"I always check the Weather Channel for the next day’s forecast, but last night, I didn’t," said the Cambridge, Mass., resident, who was shopping while visiting friends in the area. "And so I opened the door early this morning to get the newspaper and nearly froze to death."

Freezing was the norm in Aroostook County on Tuesday morning, as the area once again saw record low temperatures.

It was 14 degrees below zero at the National Weather Service office in Caribou at daybreak. That was cold enough to mark the lowest temperature on record for March 25 since 1939. The previous record low temperature for March 25 was zero degrees Fahrenheit, according to meteorologist Tony Mignone of the NWS office.
