Explosive Sales Growth In Generators In South Africa - Some Dealers Out Of Stock - PE Herald
SOUTH Africans are rushing to buy generators as the country‘s power cuts become more frequent – and some suppliers are even running out of stock. Midmacor, a Johannesburg company which imports and supplies generators, said there had been a 50 per cent increase in generator sales in the past six months.

Port Elizabeth Makro manager Eugene Plaatjies said: “The sale of generators is dramatically high – we cannot keep up with demand. “Since the power cuts started four or five months ago, we have sold R1,8-million worth of generators. We import between 50 and 60 generators a week and they are gone in no time.”

Opinions on an increase in the price of generators differ. Plaatjies said there was a definite correlation between power cuts and the price paid for a generator.

“Since the problems with Eskom, we have seen a sharp increase in price. I cannot say why exactly,” he said. “The public continue to buy them, though, because a lot of people do not want to sit with candlelight.”
