FPL OK'd to pursue renewable energy (75 MW, Florida)

STUART — By unanimous vote Thursday and with no public comment, the Martin County Local Planning Agency gave Florida Power and Light initial approval to pursue renewable energy sources at its gas-fired Martin County plant.

FPL was seeking a rezoning of just more than 1,000 acres of its 11,300-acre facility off Warfield Boulevard in western Martin County that was previously zoned for coal handling, storage and disposal. The plant no longer burns coal to fire its generators, but uses natural gas.

<snip>

No decision has been made as to which of the alternative technologies would be employed at the Warfield facility; however, LPA members were told FPL plans to designate 75 megawatts of solar-generated power at the plant.

Whichever technology is used, energy production would be carbon-neutral, LPA members were told. FPL also told agency members they were aware of no unintended consequences such as harsh glare or danger to wildlife from using solar technologies.

1. Too little too late????
Or better late than never? You decide. Or don't, whatever.

Thing is if we reduce our consumption by a third it may help. Can we do it? Yes. We. Can.

2. It's a step in the right direction, and it's worked well here in CA to add renewables
to the enrgy mix. It is the direction we want to go in.
