Morales calls for 'reparations to the earth'

At UN forum on indigenous issues, Bolivian president calls for global economic overhaul

Wednesday April 23rd, 2008

Bolivian President Evo Morales outlined a plan at the UN on Tuesday to rescue the world from environmental degradation and injustice. Drawing connections between free-market economics, excessive consumption, environmental problems and social injustice, the Bolivian leader urged the world to “put an end to the exploitation of human beings and the pillage of natural resources” by rejecting free-market theory and reallocating the money spent on war to fighting environmental and climate problems.

Transcript:
If we want to save the planet earth, to save life and humanity, we have a duty to put an end to the capitalist system. If we do not put an end to the capitalist system it's impossible to imagine that there will be equality and justice on this planet earth. This is why I believe that it is important to put an end to the exploitation of human beings and to put an end to the pillage of natural resources; to put an end to destructive wars for raw materials and for the market; to the plundering of energy, particularly fossil fuels; excessive consumption of goods and the accumulation of waste. The capitalist system only allows us to heap up waste.>>>snip

1. I agree about ending capitalism.
Ultimately, in any case. But the historical mission of capitalism is not yet finished. That is an unfortunate truth.

2. I'm glad to hear Bolivia's president saying what needs to be said.
Wish we had some leaders here who would do so. We could have them--if we would do the work that South Americans have done on transparent elections and other democratic institutions. We North Americans are not happy in our wasteful lives. That is obvious. No do we approve of the plunder, mass murder, torture and lawlessness that our government is engaged in. It's time to end this extreme radicalism of the few, and establish common sense, good government policies that benefit everyone, and restore and protect the earth. But first: transparent vote counting - get rid of the Bushite-controlled, "trade secret" vote counting. We won't see significant reform until we do.
