Coming June 3: The Twin Towers of Internet Censorship and Atomic Reactor Terror
Posted May 30, 2008 | 12:21 PM (EST)

US Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman are linking internet censorship with atomic power in a way that should terrify us all.

McCain is the real power behind Lieberman-Warner global warming bill on which the Senate could vote as early as Tuesday, June 3. As a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, McCain is pushing hard for massive subsidies to build new atomic reactors. Despite his "free market" ideology, this bill may hand a half-trillion taxpayer dollars to an industry that cannot get private backing for a failed, terror-target technology.

Now its official co-sponsor, Connecticut's Lieberman, has taken the issue into the realm of internet censorship. In a recent floor speech, he demanded that YouTube remove numerous postings that he claims promote terrorism. Yet the very bill he and McCain are pushing would force taxpayers to fund atomic reactors that are easily accessible to terrorists as machines of radioactive mass destruction.

Calling it a "ludicrous" attack on free speech, The New York Times scoffs at the claim that the internet is "one of the primary drivers" of terrorism. The charge comes in Lieberman's report on "Violent Islamist Extremism, the Internet, and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat."

The Times found it "profoundly disturbing that an influential senator would even consider telling a media company to shut down constitutionally protected speech." The ACLU has warned that similar efforts "could be a precursor to proposals to censor and regulate speech on the internet."

In a dangerous capitulation, YouTube then did pull down some 80 videos.

4. OK that's a stretch, Joe. What's scary is that it might
actually happen. Probably not through congress, you just wake up one day and turn on your PC and nothing happens. Kind of like the taking of our DNA, they've done it, now they need to make it legal (anyway!). Twisted? YES.

5. Well, if your intent is to imply that the World Trade Center attacks were not dangerous fossil fuel
terrorism, I'm sure you will get lots of dumb people to agree with you.

Regrettably, they will all be stupid people.

In fact, nuclear power is the only form of energy that will produce meaningful energy with subsidies. The problem is that nuclear energy, which has the lowest external cost of any form of energy operating on an exajoule scale - in fact the lowest external cost of any form of energy on any scale - is not subsidized enough.

Massive subsidies for no other form of energy will produce as much energy.

In fact, massive subsidies to rich people in California for solar toys has not made them a significant form of energy.

I favor a massive and huge subsidy for nuclear power on a trillion dollar scale, since it is by far, the world's largest form of climate change gas free primary energy.

I would love to take that subsidy out of the dangerous fossil subsidy - now amounting to trillions of dollars each year. I note that fundie anti-nukes couldn't care less about dangerous fossil fuel subsidies.

They couldn't care less about dangerous fossil fuel terrorism - which unlike so called "nuclear terrorism" happens to be real - dangerous fossil fuel war, or dangerous fossil fuel waste.

In fact the fundie anti-nuke community is responsible for the 400 ppm figure for dangerous fossil fuel waste in the atmosphere, which is now killing on a scale that dwarfs terrorism.

6. Saying that the internet is a primary driver of terrorism is...
basically the same as saying free speech is the primary driver of terrorism. When free speech is what you truly fear, you may be on the wrong side of history.
