Tho The videos are VERY impressive!
The building and materials used looks like small time producers could actually run facilities.
Hmm looks like a way future airlines and militaries can run their fleets without expensive fossil fuels. Which is very important as we are looking towards returning to the days of Mach 2 travel.

good for diesel engines? That's one of the least disruptive changes for automobiles.

5. From the videos on that website linked by the poster above it seems that a certain species can do it |
|
And another species can do jet fuel.
Now of course you've got to find a source of fuel additives but overall it is a good idea.

6. I could get behind genetically modified plants in this area of research |
|
Supposedly they are still working on breeding new strains of microalgae that are more resistent to viruses or other strains of algae that infect them and ones that have higher oil yields. Algae grown in open ponds are supposedly very sensitive and can easily die.
I believe that the Chinese are making strains of algae in the laboratory that can absorb heavy metals from the environment. And fuel oil microalgae supposedly can be grown in the wastewater from coal fired electrical plants, use the waste carbon deposits which would help them grow, clean them up, and convert them into fuel.
I've read that enough oil could potentially be produced from algae to fuel all of the needs of the U.S. on 1/7 the size of the land presently used by corn. An area the size of a two-car garage could produce more fuel oil than a football field sewn with soybean crops.
Hopefully, private companies won't eventually develop and turn these strains of special algae into patented products. At that point, speculators would rush in and we might be in the same problem as we are in with petroleum oil today.

7. Valcent seems to not use geneticly altered plants. |
|
I do not think I can support genetically modified types. The whole idea is wrong. Playing god is not acceptable in my view.

9. Yes.. Tho for what I said its more of an expression. |
|
You can't prove that modifying the genes of plants will not lead to disastrous effects down the lines. It's a bad idea and we can do JUST fine by crossbreeding and finding other sources.

11. what i worry about is if this modified algae gets loose.... |
|
it could spread world wide and shut down the ecosystem.

10. You know this topic got me thinking. |
|
As you likely well know. There is no way we are going to be able to effectively convert the vast amounts of aircraft to EV or Hydrogen. Its pointless...
Tho at the rate Algae fuel production is growing in density. I am wondering if it is feasible for airports to run their own fuel production in the future.
I don't have the the equations on hand. Can somebody run the math on how many acres at what initial setup cost a Regional Airport would need to fuel the aircraft?
