With high gasoline prices creating woe across the nation, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain will present his energy policy proposals in a campaign speech to energy industry leaders in Houston on Tuesday, according to sources in his campaign and the oil business.
McCain staffers sent speech invitations to energy companies today for next week's showcase event at the downtown Hilton Americas hotel. Energy is not among the categories listed as campaign issues on McCain's campaign Web site. McCain has spoken at length on the related issue of climate change, however.
"In the coming weeks, I intend to address many of the great challenges that America's energy policies must meet. When we debate energy bills in Washington, it should be more than a competition among industries for special favors, subsidies, and tax breaks," McCain said in mid-May. " In the Congress, we need to send the special interests on their way — without their favors and subsidies. We need to draw on the best ideas of both parties, and on all the resources a free market can provide."
EDIT
McCain's campaign staff did not return telephone calls about the energy speech. A campaign aide and an energy company representative spoke about the event on the condition they not be named because the event has not been publicly announced. Also on Tuesday, McCain will meet campaign donors at a reception hosted by Houston restaurant magnate Tilman Fertitta, who formerly raised money for President Clinton and contributed last year to Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign.
