PS3 Sucks . . . Juice
PS3 Sucks . . . Juice

File this under "Things you don't want your environmentally friendly girlfriend to find out about."

When on and running, the PlayStation 3 sucks up five times more energy than a fridge and about 10 times more than a Wii, according to Australian consumer agency Choice. Left on all day, it would cost near $250 a year to run.

So if you'd like to reduce your energy consumption, your choices are to either turn off your PS3 completely when not playing or to play Call of Duty 4 on your fridge.

1. Bad link...
Both the PS3 and 360 are energy hogs as seen with the PS3s GIANT power supply.

Overall it is quite interesting the way things are.

Today the minimum power supply for a PC with an ok Video card in it is 400W

HDTV power use is growing rapidly.

And soon we are going to start plugging in EV cars and hybrids.

Coal, Fission, Wind, Solar are not going to be able to keep up at this rate. And of course when there is a shortage coal is always there to try to pick up the slack regardless of Co2 emissions.

ITER is now a joke in my view so we REALLY need EMC2 fusion to make it!

5. guess how many watts my acoustic guitar requires
My tired old PC couldn't use 400W except on start-up or serious CAD work.

6. Actually there is a standby mode...

...that draws only 1-2 watts.

But Sony needs to be pressured to add various auto-standby features to it
so users can set it to go to sleep when idle or after a download completes.

The F@H folks did add a feature that allows the unit to auto-power-off
after finishing a work unit, but those take several hours. I actually only
run F@H during the winter when I can use the waste heat constructively,
though.

Major oversight on Sony's part. I'm also not sure if they've pruned their
CPU power draw --- you'd think the CellBE would have frequency scaling or
something -- 130 to 160 watts is a bit high for a mostly idle system.
Likely it's a task that still on the TODO list the way everything gets
rushed to market these days before the product is ready.

7. I think the biggest mistake was the lack of ram in my view.
Yes ram was a bit more expensive when it first came out but now its puny puny ram is doing nothing but holding back that massive cell and reducing life of the HD and Blu ray drive.

Oh and lack of opening up the graphics chip to Linux developers. That did it for me. When I want to play MGS4 ill play a friend's PS3.
