51% of Bushies believe Bush supports Kyoto treaty on global warming!
"In particular, majorities or Bush supporters incorrectly assumed that he supports multilateral approaches to various international issues, including the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) (69 percent), the land mine treaty (72 percent), and the Kyoto Protocol to curb greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming (51 percent)."

Don't miss the news about Russia ratifying Kyoto (see thread below). Let's celebrate this little victory!

4. environment doesn't poll as a top-priority issue with most people
Although Kerry has a strong record on environmental issues, I expect that his campaign strategists have determined that the risks of emphasizing environment outweigh the benefits, in terms of voter impact.

5. still don't get it
LCV sez that 85% of Americans consider themselves to be environmentalist, though they are hardly disinterested in that respect. Can't see where the risk is. Bu$h can hardly advocate extinction, global warming, pollution, etc. Seems like a gimmie, but I am only an egg.

6. It would be the usual: "Kerry is anti-growth, he cares more about
the spotted owl than winning the war on terra." It's all crap, of course, but it's crap that the GOP historically uses to their advantage.

I'm guessing they decided it didn't pay to fight that battle. They've got finite resources, and they probably figured they needed to hit Bush on national security and the economy.

Everybody already knows that democrats are strong on the environment. Talking that up doesn't get us any new voters.

In a way, this is adopting the GOP's own tactics: attack where your enemy is strongest. Instead of trying to play to a traditional democratic strength (environment), they're attacking Bush on his supposed strengths.

I do wish somebody, *anybody* would have brought up some environmental questions in the debates. As hatrack said: six hours of debates, and barely a mention of environmental issues.

7. 2 Other References About False Perceptions
I no longer have the link, but believe that U of Md results were posted here this week. To paraphrase:

1) Something like 63% of bushies believe in the link between iraq and al qaeda.
2) something like 55% believe wmd's were found or do exist in iraq.

a similar paraphrase about fox news viewers, (again no link, sorry):
if one watches fox news they are:
1) 200% more likely to believe that wmd;s actually were found.
2) 800% more likely to believe there is strong evidence of a link between iraq and al qaeda.

we are cursed with a triumverate of conspiracy in inofrmation:
1) an administration that knowingly puts out misinformation, anything from lies, to lies of omission, to foggy allusions, knowing full well it will not percolate to the top of the news cycle until it no longer matters, if at all.

2) a complicit media, either acting as a mouthpiece of the admin, or simply failing to ask the most obvious questions.

3) an electorate, not thinking deeply enough to ask the most obvious questions, or nearly as bad, believing that traditional media actually does provide information.

tough to overcome without personal effort, and most americans just won't do that.
