4. Here's the deal with electric cars.
They are SOOOOOOOO much more efficient that internal combustion because all the power is available at 0 RPM. Most of the energy (gas, electricity or whatever) used in driving is used to move the car from 0 to speed (any speed). Peak performance for IC engines is at about 4000 rpm. For electric it's at 0.

Electrics don't produce heat (wasted energy) unless they're actually working. Electrics don't idle either and they also recapture energy in breaking. Gas cars don't put fuel back in the tank when you slow down!

So, even if there is energy loss when oil is converted to electricity and electricity is converted to transportation (as opposed to oil to transportation) the efficiency of energy use more than makes up for it.

In addition, if the vehicle is a plug-in the energy going into the grid can be cleaner than plain petrol, i.e. some if it will be wind/solar etc.

If it's a parallel hybrid the tiny diesel can be powered by bio fuel like French fry oil.

Hydrogen is nice and fuel cell sounds soooo high tech, but it looks to me like hybrid electric plug-in is the short term solution. Batteries are weak link and it isn't that damn weak anymore.
