ATLANTA, June 24, 2008 – The Home Depot ®, the world's largest home improvement
retailer, today expanded its long-term commitment to the environment and sustainability by
launching a national in-store, consumer compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb recycling program
at all 1,973 The Home Depot locations. This free service is the first such offering made so
widely available by a retailer in the United States and offers customers additional options for
making environmentally conscious decisions from purchase to disposal.

1. We have an efficient CFC collection system in NYC ... more people
should know about it when getting rid of old air conditioners and refrigerators. But recycling is in its infancy, even here.

3. Wanna hear my recycling in NYC story?
Well, I'm gonna tell you anyway!

I moved there in 1978, to attend Cooper Union and I lived at 283 East Houston.
Coming from California, I was already in the habit of saving my aluminum cans.

Once I had two or three garbage bags filled with crushed cans I went to find out where to bring them.
The best I could do, if I recall, was a place in NJ.

I don't have to tell you what became of the cans.

I'm glad to hear that NY has a proper system in place now!

7. Yup. We've matured a bit. I worked @ sanitation for a while, so I know
what we have now. Not perfect, but a system that analyzes itself using a measure called "material out at midnight". Fun to build the decision support system, a technical challenge that eventually became the subject of my master's thesis.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

2. Sam's club for cfl recycling
My local Sam's only sells CFL bulbs now, and they have a recycling station. Best price in town, we are converting our apartment complexes now.

I thought I'd have to drive miles to recycle these items.

5. Good because it is so simple anyway.
Just have a sealed container for people to drop them into then load them on a truck every month or two.

6. Locate your *county* gov't with Google ...
and search their Web site for recycling instructions. If they seem deficient, try the next county over.

I was amazed at what I found at some Co. gov't Web sites; some recycle all types of materials, but often collect only at certain sites, certain days, even certain hours. It's good to know in advance.

If the Co. has a small population, you will likely not find much.
