DOE says nuclear dump cost to top $90 billion vs $58 billion
The Associated Press

Tue, Jul 15, 2008 (11:45 a.m.)

The Bush administration said Tuesday it will cost more than $90 billion to open and operate a national nuclear waste dump in at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

Ward Sproat, the Energy Department official in charge of managing the controversial Yucca Mountain project, disclosed the new number to reporters after a congressional hearing in Washington.

It was the first official estimate since 2001, when the figure stood at $58 billion. It included $9 billion already spent and the projected cost of about 100 years of operation until the dump, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is sealed forever.

Some of the increase was due to inflation, Sproat said. Also, Energy Department officials now expect the dump will hold more radioactive waste than the 77,000 tons initially approved by Congress.

A report with precise cost breakdowns will be released to Congress in the next several weeks, Sproat said.

5. You know, seriously, let's *not* build Yucca Mtn...
Spend the money on a reprocessing facility. Use the other 90% of the energy left in the fuel.

6. I'm with you on that ...
Yucca Mountain is a big white elephant whose only current "benefit"
is to fund the thousands of "consultants" and "advisors" who have
jumped onto the gravy train.

It has become a financial albatross to be hung around the neck of
any pro-nuclear discussion, to complement the fear-mongering albatross
of the C word.

The concept of a single large repository is still better than having
many small repositories across the US but, unfortunately, both the
political and emotional state of (most) people are too immature for
such a thing to work.

Hindsight is wonderful.

<sigh>
