Back-to-back quakes reported off Oregon coast

pair of earthquakes off the Oregon coast are the latest in a string of seismic disturbances about 250 miles west of Yachats.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 miles in the ocean at 3:47 p.m., followed 15 minutes later by a quake of magnitude 5.6. According to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., three other quakes hit the same area and depth over the past two days.

"It's a little bumpy but very typical," said USGS geophysicist Dale Grant. There is no threat of tsunamis from the quakes.

But this map shows just how seismically active this area of the seafloor has been since 1990:

seismic activity 1990 - present.
