2. My neighborhood is very walkable, day or night, and I walk it frequently.
I'm not in the 40 largest U.S. cities.

3. What a great resource.
I was talking to a friend of mine just yesterday about this very topic. I scored a 68 for my neighborhood and that's about what I expected. I try to walk everywhere I can here. One, it saves gas and money, and two, it's good for me and the environment.

6. They say mine is 52
But the distance they give for some places from my house are way off. In a straight line the nearest movie may be .4 mi but by streets it's more like double that. My nearest bus route is about .3 mi but the nearest STOP is actually .6 mi. and they're off on practically everything else in my neighborhood.

7. My town scored a 77,
although some of their distances to places were waaaaay off. Still though, I live in a small town that's very walkable.

9. not the most accurate
for me it counts a corporate library (not open to the public) and a kids store as a school.

My area got a whopping 48 even with that.

14. mine is 58 and I think a lot of it is based on what you can reach on your walk
Edited on Sun Jul-27-08 09:43 PM by yellowdogintexas
like can you reasonably walk to the grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, schools, etc.

The funny thing is that they still have the Winn Dixie which is long gone, and they also have the Harmony Science Academy which took over the building the Winn Dixie was in. Too funny.

edited to add: but you can safely walk in our neighborhood just for excercise any time you like. People walk at night quite frequently especially during the very hot summer weather we have here.

16. My neighborhood 32 out of 100 - car dependent.
Edited on Sun Jul-27-08 10:21 PM by kmlewis
But I knew that. This is a horrible city for walking. When I was a kid all kinds of stores and stuff were in walking distance but no more.

And it's too damn hot to walk more than a block anyway.

17. Mine is a highly inaccurate 26. The map doesn't show the walking trails put in.
Our builder, the park district and adjascent retail stores just outside of our neighborhood, put in a bike paths that lead around, but also a land path that crosses over the water/land preserve area. We can cut the trip in 1/2 by just taking the paths on bikes or by foot. If you have one of those kids bike strollers, you can latch it on - load it up with groceries, and you're all set.

21. Mine got a 57, but that doesn't take into account
the fact that the temperature on the ground (concrete) is about 120 from 10 am to damn near midnight.

blech.

22. For some odd reason they give me an 80
The nearest bookstore is a mile away, and it's a Christian bookstore. The Barnes and Noble is two miles as the crow flies, and the crow doesn't fly down the freeway. :P

There's a Thai place around the corner, but the nearest coffee shop is close to a half a mile.

The nearest real grocery store is .7 miles, and when it's 100 out, that's not gonna happen. :P

Really, the best place within walking distance is the Post Office.

And yeah, that's a bar. ;)

23. Walk Score: 9 out of 100 — Car-Dependent
Walk Score: 9

On top of the things they score, we also have no sidewalks, no streetlights, and rarely a flat place to walk - it's all either uphill or downhill. Makes it hard to bike the area as well.

24. Did this one a while back when it was posted. Mine is a 6.
And I had to put in a nearby address because mine doesn't even register (our "street" is actually a private gravel road that services the eight homes in our little "subdivision" - it's not a public road and is not maintained by the county - but it is used as our address by the post office.)

And the locations are WAYYYYY off. It showed the United Building Center store as being located basically at the end of my driveway - it's actually located about 5 miles away on the opposite side of town!! It listed one of our two grocery stores as being located in the northern part of town and it's actually on the far south side of town. Those are just two mistakes that I noticed - didn't look further than that.

I would say my score should really be a zero because, essentially, we are at least 3 miles from every business in town.

25. I only got 52 :(
But I think I have a very walkable neighborhood, the sidewalks are always packed. I can get to everything I need and I haven't driven in years.
