Question about the history and practice of offshore drilling
Why are there oil rigs in Santa Barbara, but nowhere else on the west coast?

Is it because there are natural oil seeps there, or is it because the channel is fairly gentle and doesn't get big waves, or both?

Also, are there offshore oil platforms anywhere in the world where the waves are violent for much of the year?

In short, what is the real threat of expanded oil production on the west coast? Do the oil companies really want to do this, or is this threat totally toothless?

Thanks.

2. I'll try
The oil fields in the Santa Barbara Channel are part of the Santa Maria/Ventura Basin. The basin is both on land and under the sea.

There are no other basins that produce like this one offshore in California.

The North Sea has some very rough weather and it has many platforms. The danger is not so much rough water as it is leaks from pipes, potential blow-outs and leaks from tankers.
