New Yorker/NYT Reporter Elizabeth Kolbert Talks Climate @ Ball State Q&A - 1 Student Shows Up
MUNCIE -- After writing about the harmful affects of climate change, author Elizabeth Kolbert finds it difficult to justify travel. "This is the biggest part of my carbon footprint is coming to places like Ball State," Kolbert said Tuesday as she sat in Bracken Library on the BSU campus.

In between speaking at a luncheon at the Ball State Indianapolis Center and addressing freshmen in a formal speech in Emens Auditorium, the former New York Times reporter and writer for The New Yorker was scheduled to participate in a "Meet the Author Q&A" with students who had questions about the 2008 freshmen common reader, Kolbert's "Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change."

Only one student showed up for that session, however.

The book was chosen by a selection committee of 16 faculty, staff and community members based on its affordability and accessibility. In addition, it had to be by an author who was "alive and available" and something students wouldn't choose on their own, said Melinda Messineo, an associate sociology professor.
