Are there any reasonably priced household LED bulbs on the market yet?
What I'm looking for are LED bulbs that are equivalent to 75W and 100W conventional bulbs. I have a large number of houseplants that I give supplemental lighting to over the winter by using a few fluorescent bulbs 12 hr a day. This works fine, but a few LED's would work better. And by reasonably priced, I mean I'd be willing to pay around $10/bulb. Thanks.

4. You probably are using them in places where they are turned on/off frequently.
That causes rapid failure. Best use is for locations where the light is often left on, or seldom turned on.

8. Some compact fluorescents are crap.
But I've got a few I bought years and years ago that are still working strong... Of course I can't find those sorts anymore, and most of them were rather bulky anyways.

It's hard to tell which of today's models will have similar lifespans. I tend to judge them by the cover. If a lot of care was put into the casing I can maybe hope as much care was put into the electronics. Cheap electronics either kills itself or kills the fluorescent tube prematurely.

LED lighting will probably suffer similar sorts of problems. A lot of early price-cutting models will fail prematurely souring the market for LED lighting in general. The first LED Christmas lights I bought were terrible, they simply put LED's into a regular string and the problems with corrosion were much worse than with incandescents because the lights are cooler and didn't quickly evaporate water in the sockets, creating an aggressive electrochemical stew.

I personally can't stand the flickering of old style magnetic fluorescents or LED's that are simply wired in series and ballasted with a simple choke.

6. LEDs are not cheap, CFLs are much cheaper
that site does have lower prices on volume buys. I didn't look around for a price, but bought my dimmable CFLs from them at a good price.
