http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/nov/13/xcel-begins-smart-hybrid-electric-vehicle-tests-bo/Xcel Energy has given a $75,000 grant to the Boulder County Commissioners to launch a test of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that can both charge from, and give power back to, the “smart” power-grid technology being built in Boulder.
Xcel is performing the nation’s first large-scale test of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid technologies in Boulder as part of its SmartGridCity project.
In addition to using far less fuel than non-hybrid vehicles and emitting 30-percent fewer carbon emissions, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid technology also can send power back into the power grid that feeds the area.
The unique capability makes it possible for Xcel to pull power from the battery of the car during periods of peak-power usage.
