managing director of global financial service company Morgan Stanley had a bleak outlook for nuclear

Nuclear Suffers from Weak Markets

The Energy Collective featured a webinar about the future of nuclear power on Thursday. The webinar coincides with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s review of 17 applications by utilities for approval to build and operate up to 34 new nuclear reactors. There are already 104 nuclear reactors operating in the U.S.

Despite the fact that the NRC has already accepted 11 of the applications, webinar participant Ashton Poole, who is a managing director of global financial service company Morgan Stanley, had a bleak outlook for nuclear development from a financial standpoint, and at one point suggested that reactor construction might require foreign investment.

The nuclear forecast was dreary for want of funding, which stood in stark contrast to the renewables forecast presented by industry analysts during the collective’s webinar last week. Experts described investment in renewables as constant despite current market conditions.

Poole, who is managing director of Morgan Stanley’s Global Power and Utility Group, indicated that the development of nuclear today depends upon three factors: 1) The ability of the utilities to mitigate construction risks. 2) The NRC following a predictable path. 3) Developments on the technology front. However, all three factors are highly uncertain.

1. And next you're going to announce that Lehman Brothers also is full on nuclear experts.
I don't know whether the lack of an original idea in the anti-nuke cults is the reason that the cite other people who know as little about nuclear energy as they do - now America's famous "financial" analysts - but none of these stupid imprecations have anything to do with the now thirty year old fact that nuclear energy is the largest, by far, source of climate change gas free energy, the cleanest form of climate change gas free energy, and the easiest to build form of climate change gas free energy.

Morgan Stanley, on the other hand, seems not to have grasped that by simply building <em>one</em> nuclear plant, one could easily match the entire output of the solar industry in any given year.

I can't wait until the same stupid people who have lead America to the abyss start begging for bailouts, like the car cult freaks at GM, the flex fuel Tahoe company.

Ignorance doesn't merely kill. It seems it bankrupts. And speaking of bankrupt, all this whistling in the dark by dumb anti-nukes speaks volumes about how their 30 year cult chant "nuclear is dead" is going. It reminds me of other denizens of certitude, the ones that Rove said were about to embark on a "permanent majority."

2. NNadir gets his numbers wrong, again.
Nuclear is NOT "the largest, by far, source of climate change gas free energy".
We get slightly more energy from hydro than nuclear.
Saying "largest, by far" is completely wrong.
Anyone can look up the numbers themselves, they are in these tables:
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/aer/txt/ptb1101.html
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/aer/txt/ptb1116.html

The rest of his post is just nonsense.

5. Yes, he does
A google search for 'nnadir nuclear "world's largest, by far"' reveals that he repeats this misinformation over and over again like a cheap advertising slogan.

6. I see numbers that support NNadir's position for the USA
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 03:31 PM by GliderGuider
From this page: http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/epat1p1.html

Net Generation by Energy Source by Type of Producer, 1995 through 2006 (Thousand Megawatthours)

2006
Coal: 1,990,926
Nuclear: 787,219
Hydro: 289,246
Other Renewables: 96,423

This shows nuclear generating twice as much electricity as hydro and other renewables combined, in the USA. For the world as a whole, hydro and nuclear are roughly equal, as shown in your second link.
