"The golf cart is the simplest thing to (modify) to show people that (solar power) works," he said. "I haven't had to charge this one for 120 days," he said.
While the cost of modifying a golf cart to run on solar power is a steep $1,845, Heckenstaller points out that money will eventually even out.
"If someone golfs three times a week, it's costing them $5 to $6 every time they plug their cart into an outlet," Hecknstaller said. "It ends up costing them $800 to $1,000 a year."

Universal Studios plans to switch to solar-powered cartshttp://www.autoweek.com/article/20081125/FREE/811259988Add Universal Studios in Hollywood to the list of companies going green.
Universal will swap out its fleet of 300 gasoline-powered vehicles for solar-electric hybrids. The small, golf-cart-like rides can go 40 to 60 miles on a fully charged battery, and driving around in the sun can boost performance by an extra seven miles.
Cruise Car Inc. is the maker of the vehicles, and it says they can be made street legal in most states on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or less.
And the solar cars won’t simply be for cruising around sets with famous actors sipping lattes. Universal’s Hollywood facility covers 415 acres and is mountainous, meaning the carts be put to the test on different terrains.
