Shoshone Grandmothers Fight Barrick Corporation Gold Mine At Site
“We want them off this mountain, this is a spiritual genocide what’s going on; destroying our mountain is destroying our beliefs. Removing water is death to the mountains. No way. We will take whatever action we need to – we’re going through the U.S. courts and we will stand on this Mountain in support of her and call on those people around the world to stand with us in solidarity.” Stated Carrie Dann, Western Shoshone Grandmother, Executive Director of the Western Shoshone Defense Project and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award (the alternate to the Nobel Peace Prize).

Barrick Gold Corporation, the world’s largest gold mining company, headquartered in Canada, plans to construct and operate the mine, known as the Cortez Hills Expansion Project. The area is located entirely within the territory of the Western Shoshone Nation, recognized in the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley.

The Mine would blast and excavate a new massive open pit on Mount Tenabo over 900 acres in size, with a depth of over 2,000 feet. It would include several new waste disposal and processing facilities (including a cyanide heap-leaching facility), consisting of approximately 1,577 million tons of waste rock, 53 million tons of tailings material, and 112 million tons of spent heap leach material.

We need to reconcile ourselves to nature and the Grandmothers are leading the way. The Grandmother's stand is heroic. Deserves another KICK! :kick: :kick: :kick:

7. Yellerpup -I hope Obama and the grandmothers can undo some of the damage Bush
has done to Mother Nature over the past 8 years and particularly during the past few months of his "lame duck" days. He is doing his best to destroy this nation.

Being a grandmother, myself, I have tried to counter some of his moves through Native Unity but there is no way I can compare myself with the likes of Shoshone Carrie Dann. Her sister, Mary, was also outstanding in the fight for the environment and their Native rights until her death a few years ago.

8. The audacity of that lame duck takes my breath away.
Is he unconscious or is he truly evil? Maybe he's just impaired by intoxication, but whatever the reason, maybe it took someone THAT BAD to wake up the rest of the country. I don't know what he is, but I am glad that we have changed course and I am grateful to have hope once again. I know nothing of Native Unity. I'll Google it and see if there is a way I can help. I have no children of my own, but have over 60 nieces and nephews. Even if I had no dog in the race at all, the planet would still be worth saving for the sake of all the children of all the nations. I am especially proud of the First Americans of this continent from all the many tribes. I will honor the Dann sisters in my thanks. And, thank you for bringing awareness to DU. :hi:

9. I went to Native Unity and read some articles.
Very interesting and excellent work going on in the West. I'm from Oklahoma, originally. I came across your entry about fry bread! When I first moved to NYC in 1979 I had to learn how to make flour tortillas from scratch and have become spoiled now, to the real thing. I also make fry bread from time to time as a special treat. I made it once for a friend from Kashmir and it brought tears to his eyes. He said it reminded him of home! Now that we've feasted ;-) it's time to save Tenabo Mountain for the Shoshone and the world.
