$41.00 for oil change on my Honda Civic Hybrid at dealer.
Would have been $14.99 for a regular vehicle since they were having a special on oil changes. They charged me 8.25 a qt. for required 20wt oil. Did I get ripped off?

3. You get ripped off anytime you go to a dealer
My dealer wanted to change an air filter for me. I asked how much. They said $80. I laughed and said no. The air filter is a $20 part. They wanted to charge me 1 hour labor for 5 minutes of work.

4. Why wasn't it considered a regular vehicle?
The 14.99 wouldn't have included oil, it would have just been for labor. I'm assuming the $41 was for oil and labor?

9. It would have been 14.99, if not for the special oil.

11. Have you checked to see if you can get the special oil yourself?
I've brought different oil to our guys and they only charged me 15 bucks to put it in. Call AutoZone or Pep Boys and see what they are charging for that oil.

5. The fucking gouging by the oil companies, lower gas prices, but then rob you blind
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 03:05 PM by GreenTea
to maintain ones vehicle. $9.00 a quart for Mobil 1 at most auto stores and other stores that sell oil.
fucking obscene the price for a quart of oil.

Well Exxon alone made 45 billion dollar PROFIT in just the past 3 month's (quarter). The republican corporate greed is almost unbelievable and it only gets worst, these are truly sick motherfuckers.

7.  They used the top shelf stuff that's for sure
I bought a gallon of 10w30 last night for a little more than ten dollars. Oil filters for your car runs about 10 dollars. So, I imagine they charged you about right including labor.

8. $41 at Firestone for my oil change
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 03:09 PM by BattyDem
But they always give me a coupon for my next visit, so I got $10 off this oil change (I only paid $31) and I got a $10 coupon that's good for six months! :D

On edit: Firestone's standard oil change is usually cheaper than that, but I get the premium stuff because I have high mileage.

10. I pay slightly less for that for my old truck
oil change and it isn't at a dealer. I've been going to the place for 20 years. I'm in and out in a flash with a fresh cup of coffee and a friendly smile. Its worth it to me. When I was a youngin, I changed it myself. Never More!

you got taken. Dealers are the most expensive place, hands down, for general servicing. Jiffy Lube/chain places are bad. Home owned lube places are pretty good. Oil changes are easy to do yourself.

Honda Civic Hybrids require:

  • Put car on ramps/jack stands
  • Lower bottom engine cover
  • Drain oil (like any other engine)and reinstall drain plug
  • Change filter (never use cheap filters). Use good quality (Wix, NAPA Gold or K&N)
  • Put in oil (of your preference) 20W
  • Rise and attach lower engine cover
  • Drop car back to the ground
  • Reset oil indicator

    • Put the key in the ignition and turn it to position 2.
    • Push the selector button until the dash displays "Oil Life".
    • Press and hold the selection button until the indicator blinks A1 on the Left (About 10 Seconds).
    • Release the button, and press and hold for another 10 seconds. The indicator should reset and read 100%.

Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 03:32 PM by Blaze Diem
You could have gotten a whole barrel of the sweet stuff and changed your own oil for a very long time.
Well ok..Just offering a thought here.

18. Food for thought
After reading the other replies, I thought this might be interesting. First is a rundown of the differences in motor oils. Second is a Consumer Reports article that brings the discussion back to where the rubber meets the road, what do those differences mean to automobile engines.

20. Looks like the going rate is $6.99/qt (give or take)...
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 07:23 PM by guruoo
I picked the '04 model as an example:

For your 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid 1.3L Gas/Elec SOHC :
? API service classification
Note:
'API*'
Weight = 0W-20

Mobil / 1 qt. SAE 0W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil part# 98JQ66 $6.99
http://www.autozone.com/N,100164+4294924036/shopping/accessoriesResults.htm

And the best filter money can buy (K&N, IMHO) should only set you back about $12 or so...

21. You did not get ripped off, you got a good deal
the special synthetic oil is rather pricey. And this oil is mandatory for the Hybrid Civic. I get my oil changed at an independent shop that does lots of hybrids and it costs $59 a change because they use 100% synthetic oil while the dealer uses a mix of synthetic and natural. I get about 5 mpg more with the pure synthetic oil.

Go to all the chat groups on hybrids and read up on what the pros say. You don't have to change the oil as often with these hybrids, but he quality of the oil has a big impact on your mpg.

22. Full Synthetic Oil
Your Hybrid requires premo oil. That price is actually not that bad. Get used to paying $5+ even at Walmart for a quart of oil.

23. Thats about $10 more than what I pay for each of my vehicles.
Thats at a regular oil change shop, using regular 5w30 oil. Many places price it based on amount of oil used to fill up, others like the one I go to have a fixed price cause they do a bunch of other little checks plus vacuuming the floor. But its no cheaper to go a non-fixed priced shop cause both my auto's each have a v8 that takes around 6 quarts. Your Civic may take around 4qts, but then again you did take it to the dealer where I would have NO BUSINESS what so ever with them unless I need a part I cant get anywhere else, or buying a car.

24. My 5,000 mile oil change was $56.00.
I went in this spring for the scheduled oil change and was very surprised at the $$$$. I asked the sales guys at the dealer and he told me the hybrid version uses a special synthetic 0-20W oil.

The next day I got a call from Honda asking me about my recent experience. I told them the dealership was clean and courteous but $56.00 for an oil change was excessive. After hanging up with them, I got a call from the dealer (apparently Honda passes dissatisfaction back to the dealer) about an hour later. The sales guy gave me the "synthetic oil is more expensive" pep talk. I said "That may be so, but $56.00 is a bit much for 3 1/2 quarts of oil w/filter." He then told me if I took a written satisfaction poll from Honda (and gave them high marks) they would give me a free oil change.

I took the poll and didn't hear anything more from them.

Around September/October, a light came on my console so I took it back to the dealer. While there I asked about that freebie oil change. The fellow looked my record up on his systems and found that I get a freebie oil change coming. He made the appropriate notation on my record and my next oil change will cost me zippo. (The warning light was low tire pressure.)
