Freak ice storm strikes western Canada

OTTAWA (AFP) — An unusual bout of warm winter weather turned snow into freezing rain Monday in western Canada, coating much of Manitoba and Saskatchewan provinces in ice, snapping power lines and halting travel.

Federal police described the storm as one of the worst to strike the region in decades, with hundreds of vehicles sliding off slick roads.

"We've had emergency vehicles in the ditch, we had a fire truck in the ditch, and even one of the highway sanders was in the ditch," Corporal Larry Dahlman of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) told public broadcaster CBC.

"It basically looks like a used car lot."

In recent years, we've had many more ice storms and many fewer snow storms than we did in the past.

2. You're getting fewer snow storms?!
Wow. What part of NH are you in? We on the coast have gotten hammered all winter with ice AND snow.

3. As a general trend our area of New York State is getting fewer/smaller snow storms
than we used to, and more ice storms.

Although we've had more snow this year than we have had for a few years, it cannot compare to what we had just a few decades ago.

Check the trends in your area:
