Klansmen or Environmentalists?

People started gathering at the Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church in southwestern Kentucky before sunrise. First there were just a few, sealed in their cars with the heat blasting, but before long there were close to 100, standing in the parking lot in multiple coats. It was the first Friday in December, 23 degrees at dawn and nearly windless. Everyone was looking up.

Operation Migration’s four ultralight planes floated into view over some oak and maple trees, then passed over the small, white chapel. An ultralight is powered by a massive rear propeller. In the sky, it looks like a scaled-down Formula 1 car dangling under the wing of a hang glider. Because the little planes taxi on three wheels, pilots call them trikes. At 200 feet, the first pilot, Chris Gullikson, was perfectly visible in his trike’s open cockpit. He was wearing his whooping-crane costume, a white hooded helmet and white gown that looked like a cross between a beekeeping suit and a Ku Klux Klan get-up. Gullikson and the other trike pilots were going to pick up the 14 juvenile whooping cranes that they were, little by little, leading south for the winter...

Yes, these people dress up like cranes, and then fly ultralight planes to teach the birds how to migrate.

The chicks are then shipped to the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin for “flight training.” Like many species, whooping cranes learn to migrate only by following their parents. They have no inborn understanding of where to go, and if no older birds are around to show them, they’ll just stay put. So the ultralight and its costumed pilot are introduced as a proxy. While still in their eggs, these cranes were played recordings of a trike engine, attuning them to it as a pseudo-parental presence. Now in Wisconsin, they spend their first summer learning to run, then fly, behind the aircraft. By fall, the whole entourage sets off for Florida, and Operation Migration takes its stage-managed show on the road.

Hopefully they teach the birds how to avoid running into one of T. Boone Pickens' bird grinders.

that every single post you write automatically discredits itself, and by extension, your on-line identity. That's the tragedy part of the ongoing tragi-comedy you provide, which is, indeed, the only "value added" you bring to DU.

The reason that every single post you write automatically discredits itself and you, is that every single post you write contains a blatant falsehood borne of your seemingly irresistable need to exaggerate or worse, make up fantasies in your mind about the state of other DUers.

You start out with, "If you could read..." but of course, you know, I can read, or else I wouldn't be responding to you on a written internet forum, and I wouldn't be a fairly regular poster to the Greatest Page.

It doesn't take long for the next self-discrediting statement to appear -- well with you, every statement has its self-discrediting aspect. You write, "cowering under a table fearing for that atom" while knowing, I hope, that neither I nor anyone else on this Forum fears the atom, and "rather than being environmentalists..." while not acknowledging that in my case, and the case of many others you routinely insult, we actually are. The same goes for your phrases about chainsaws and McMansions.

In all serious, and I realize this may sound like snark, but definitely isn't, and is not intended to be, I think you have serious mental health issues. I think you have more serious mental health issues than pretty much anyone else posting on DU -- so serious, that you should see a mental health professional as soon as is practicable. No normal person reading what you write on a regular basis could conclude otherwise. If you could read your own writing objectively, and from the perspective of relatively normal mental condition, I'm sure you would agree. And unfortunately, like most people experiencing severe mental health issues, it is impossible for you to recognize your own dire condition.

For most of us, when we aren't laughing at you or scratching our heads at the sheer irrational lunacy of what you write, we are just thinking about how sad your cognitive/emotional/mental health situation must be.

Again please don't take this as an insult. There is no reason to alert on this post, because it isn't meant in a negative way. It's meant as an expression of sincere concern for an anonymous internet poster who obviously has some mental health issues and could benefit from treatment. Again, this is not in the form of an insult. I am completely serious when I suggest that I think you would benefit from being evaluated and treated. Even if you are not a danger to yourself, the attributes you display make me worry that you could be a danger to otehrs in "real life."

I enjoyed what you wrote and have to confess that I also am a little embarrassed about recommending DU to friends for all the good stuff because nutcases like the aforementioned will make it seem that I am linking to a nutcase forum.

I think that what we should do is start a campaign of alerting to every single post he writes that contains an insult. I mean every single post that contains and insult. And we should explain to the mods exactly what the insult is and what rule is violated. Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this if "it" is on ignore.

If all of us normal people on this Forum did that all day every day, the appropriately named "lowest point" of DU would soon be forced to go away.
