US warned on mining
March 01, 2009 12:00am

AUSTRALIAN Aborigines, a French physicist and a US actor have joined indigenous peoples from Africa and the US to send legislators a stark warning about the dangers of uranium mining.

<snip>

On Friday representatives of the Tuareg nomads of Niger, Native Americans and Australian Aborigines told US legislators of the ravages of uranium mining on their communities.

<snip>

Sidi-Amar Taoua, a Tuareg who has lived in the US for seven years, said Areva had been mining uranium in Niger for more than 40 years with "no regard for the environment, people's heath (or) animals".

"Uranium mining has impacted every area and sparked a war between the Tuareg who took up arms to defend their land, and the Government, which is complicit with Areva," Mr Taoua said.

<snip>

Actor James Cromwell, who played George H.W. Bush in the film W, said when the price of the mineral peaked at about $215.52 a pound in 2007, mining companies descended "like vultures" on uranium-rich areas, 70 per cent of which were situated on land inhabited by low-income indigenous communities.

1. I thought I read on here that uranium mining is harmless that it hasn't killed anyone here in the US
That it is a totally benign operation. You reckon they may just be a bunch of worry warts :sarcasm:

Kick and rec.

4. it is completely harmless, unless you live next to where it mined...
and how to dispose if it. Those issues seem to be the part all the pro nukes crowd refuse to deal with.

But other than the occasional Chernobyl, it's just fine...juuuuuuust fine.

I'm sure the Navajo Nation can tell us a few things.

5. The Navajos have been trying to tell us but not many want to hear
I believe that we can clean up our skys without going nuclear to get there. I've heard and read so many half truths and bullshit lies about the safety of nuclear energy back through the years that I can never trust them now. Geo-thermal and a grid to get it to the population centers is our future.

3. Monday's civil disobedience is already working
Congressional leaders: Capitol Power Plant should stop burning coal

WASHINGTON — Four days before a planned civil disobedience action at a coal-fired power plant near the U.S. Capitol, the leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate asked Thursday for the plant to replace all its coal with natural gas.
