Filmmakers in line for Emmy after whale of an adventure , Whale Wars
BY KATE CLIFFORD
20/07/2009

TWO Launceston, Australia filmmakers are celebrating an Emmy Award nomination for their work on a Discovery Channel documentary called Whale Wars. Freelance cameraman Ashley Dunn and cinematographer Simon Wearne were among three others who voyaged to the Southern Ocean to capture the intense moments between animal activists and Japanese whalers in 2008.

The documentary included everything from activists being held captive for three days to almost being trapped in iceberg- ridden water in a boat not built for the conditions.

"It was an incredible ordeal, being placed in that freezing ocean with huge icebergs in a ship not rated for ice," Mr Wearne said. "It was the unique experience to observe and reflect on the whaling debate and we are really pleased to be acknowledged for the work we did."

Whale Wars was an Animal Planet series that followed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship, the Steve Irwin, as it waged a battle to find and stop whaling ships in the Antarctic. Last week the film was honored with an Emmy nomination for outstanding cinematography for nonfiction programming. Mr Dunn and Mr Wearne, along with camera crew from the US, were hired by Animal Planet to record the events on board the Steve Irwin for five weeks. "Although we weren't part of the campaign, our job was to capture every attack and every tense moment between the two ships," Mr Wearne said.

Winners will be announced at the Creative Arts Awards ceremony held at the Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, on September 12.
