Schwarzenegger to veto renewable energy bills
Schwarzenegger to veto renewable energy bills

By JULIET WILLIAMS (AP) – 1 hour ago

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office said Saturday that he would veto legislation requiring a third of California's energy to come from renewable sources by 2020, choosing instead to mandate the change through an executive order.

The Democratic bills that passed the state Legislature just before the end of the legislative session Friday would have set up the most aggressive renewable energy standards in the nation.

But they also sought to limit the amount of energy from sources such as wind, solar and geothermal that could come from out-of-state. Schwarzenegger and some energy producers said the legislation would set up too many regulatory hurdles.

"The poorly drafted, overly complex bills passed by the Legislature are protectionist schemes that will kill the solar industry in California and drive prices up like the failed energy deregulation of the late 1990s," Schwarzenegger's communications director, Matt David, said in a statement Saturday.

The governor's office didn't immediately explain how Schwarzenegger would implement the goals of the legislation through the executive order. Supporters worry that it would not have the same strength of law as the bills would have.

The Independent Energy Producers, which represents ...

This is an interesting development. Arnold, as a Republican, is automatically suspect. However, he has been remarkably consistent in verbalizing his support for renewables.

If we presume for the moment both branches have the same goal, the question becomes can the executive command and control approach deliver better results than the committee/compromise/consensus approach of the legislature?

They will both have their special interest groups but the alignment will be different.

2. So called "renewable energy" is always a "by (year) xxxx" proposition anyway. As soon as the year
approaches, they just change it to a new one.

They did it with their stupid "ZEV" initiative (10% emission free cars by 2003 - passed in 1990), their dumb ass "brazillion solar roofs bill" and the rest of their fantasy crap.

No matter how many "by 2020" initiatives there are, in 2020, whoever the governor is, as the lower level land mass submerges, California will announce "by 2030" initiatives.

What difference does it make? So called "renewable energy" doesn't work very well, and basically most of the advocates are front men for the dangerous natural gas industry and/or the car CULTure in any case.

The problem is one of denial and the fact that most dangerous fossil fuel "bait and switch" anti-nukes can't think very well.

Governor Hydrogen Hummer ran on a "renewables will save us" platform to lots of cheers here, on a Democratic website.

I knew immediately he was lying, but then again, I know how energy works.

No, Nnadir, you don't.

You do know how to make false arguments, how to write insane rants, and how to totally screw up simple logic though.
