Hummer owners have a different moral sense than the rest of us.
They get five times more tickets than the average driver, for example. They have a moral ethic that can be summarized by:
guns, guts and gas guzzlers. In their hate of East Coast elites, Hummer owners may be embracing the very stereotypes their vehicles confer on them in order to prove how American they are. Similarly, like-minded individuals may seek out Hummer ownership to prove and show off their beliefs. Will they feel the same when the H2s are built by a company called Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery?
The
discredited CNW study that claimed that Prius cars had a greater carbon footprint than the Hummer has been soundly discredited but the Hummer delusional conservative mindset continues on.
Hummer owners seem to have forgotten that the "real" original Americans had genocide inflicted upon them by expansionists with the moral certainty that they should dominate the world -- ironically their descendents are now trying to keep undesirable foreigners out.
ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2009) —
Hummer drivers believe they are defending America's frontier lifestyle against anti-American critics, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research..
"As we studied American Hummer owners and their ideological beliefs, we found that they consider Hummer driving a highly moral consumption choice," write the authors. "For Hummer owners it is possible to claim the moral high ground."
The authors explain that Hummer owners employ the ideology of American foundational myths, such as the "rugged individual," and the "boundless frontier" to construct themselves as moral protagonists. They often believe they represent a bastion again anti-American discourses evoked by their critics.
