Do Electric Cars Cause Cancer?
"The world of electric cars is a rah-rah world. There are numerous economic arguments against their widespread adoption, but that hasn’t stopped government officials, environmental activists, and most importantly automakers from moving aggressively toward electrified transportation."

<>

"Obviously, however, an EV running off an electric motor with a battery that can weigh 600 lbs. raises the health-hazard issue: Does the electromagnetic field generated by the car pose a threat to drivers and passengers?"

http://www.thebigmoney.com/blogs/shifting-gears/2009/12/15/do-electric-cars-cause-cancer

"Obviously". This is the kind of nonsense which we will see more of in coming months and years as EVs gain wider acceptance. Never mind that there's not one iota of evidence to support it - it's enough for hacks like Matthew DeBord to ask the question. To clarify DeBord's mindset, here's another piece titled, "Hummer, How We Need Thee" from 2008:

"When General Motors announced that it would subject its Hummer division to what in the automotive business is known as a "review," you could hear the tree huggers, the unreconstructed hippies, the postmodern Greens, Al Gore's organic peanut gallery, every single customer at the Pasadena Whole Foods and the United Prius Owners of America shove aside their alfalfa sprouts and commence clapping."

7. Or living near a cell tower or electricity plant
The author asked a question with no basis in fact just to cast doubt. It's a time honored GOP tactic.

2. Everything causes cancer according to somebody or other.
A causes cancer according to one group. No, B causes cancer, A is OK according to another group.

Mostly this kind of thinking is what I call Airhead 101.

5. Good Lord, could DeBord be any LESS professional or MORE biased?
That's just plain desperate and pathetic. Who does he lobby for? Probably the fossil fuel industry; a huge contributor to early death world wide.

I don't think anything was proven one way or the other.

10. At the moment, there doesn't seem to be any proof that low-frequency EMF...
(such as is produced by power lines) causes disease of any sort. On the
other hand, power companies do tend to spray herbicides along their
transmission line routes to keep down the brush, and those herbicides
may have effects. (That's a factor that confounded the early studies.)

9. Everything in life is a calculated risk
and we're surrounded by gizmos that pump out EV fields from kitchen appliances to computers to fans to music to telephones.

Nobody is going to get out alive, you know.

19. Subways have been electric for 100+ years
Millions of people ride subways every day in major cities from New York to Singapore. Those trains are run by electric motors many times more powerful than those in electric cars. If there was a rise in cancer rates amongst subway riders, I'm sure it would be known by now.
